1880 1st ed Juliana Berners Book of Saint Albans FISHING Angling Compleat Angler

A fine reissue of the first English book on angling!

Juliana Berners was an early 15th-century English writer who is known for her works on English heraldry and sports. Most notably, she wrote treatises on fishing, hunting, and hawking. Originally known as 'Book of Saint Albans', this treatise was immensely popular, so much so that Berners added the section on fishing later. Entitled 'Treatyse of Fysshynge with an Angle', this section offers practical advice for fishing and is known to have been the primary source for Isaak Walton's treatise on fishing 'The Compleat Angler'.

This 1880 printing is the first issue of the photographic facsimile edition published in London. It should be noted that this facsimile edition is considered "one of the best facsimiles ever executed" by Westwood & Satchell.

Small quarto plum roan spine extra gilt compartments & faux bands with cloth sides (tips a bit worn/rebacked with old spine relaid/cloth rubbed). Plates mostly clean & white but a few have pale edge foxing. Two tissue guards torn, one at p17 lost. The plates are all beautifully hand coloured and heightened with gum.

Calcutta: Thacker, Spink & Co (1933) Ltd., 1942. Original (not facsimile) dustwrapper has a 3 inch tear to the top right-hand corner of front panel and a smaller, 2 inch one at the top end of spine, and some smaller tears and creasing to the edges of dustwrapper. Minor bumping to spine ends and corners of blue boards, an old price (16 rupees which would have been 21/4 sterling, or just over a guinea, so quite expensive back then) in pencil at top corner of f/ep and original (or a slightly later) owner's gift message dated August 1946 on same page. Otherwise a good clean tight copy in not so good dustwrapper of this not-very-common hard-cover book.
