Thomas Nuttall (1786-1859) was an English botanist who trained as a printer, but was encouraged to follow his interest in botany after coming to Philadelphia in the early 19th century. He spent much of the rest of his life studying the flora and fauna of the United States, publishing Manual of the Ornithology of the United States and of Canada, heading the botanical gardens at Harvard University, and working at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia. This is one of several important papers of that were published in the Transactions of the American Philosophical Society. Scarce. In Very Good+ Condition: disbound from a larger volume; final leaf largely detached from text block; minimal foxing; otherwise, clean and bright.

A useful working copy. [Andre was an explorer and collector of natural history specimens . He wrote a glossary of common and scientific names of plants and animals and put together a collection of 1800 bird skins which are held at Tring. He was a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and a Fellow of the Zoological Society. Vienna: Schrämblischen, 1817. Image is 8 1/8 inches by 6 1/4 inches on a sheet that is 9 1/16 inches by 7 1/8 inches. Drawn and engraved by pharmacist turned naturalist Ferdinand Vietz ((1772-1815) and published in volume 7 of Icones Plantarum Medico-Oeconomico-Technologicarum, edited by J. L. Kerndl and published by Schrämblischen in Vienna in 1818. Original hand-coloring. Like all the plates from Vietz's classic work on medicinal uses of plants, this is a lovely original print on high-quality watermarked laid paper. Condition is very good: clean and bright.
