Broadside - [East India Company in Altona - China - George II of Great Britain] Görtz, Fr. W. von Schlitz gen. "Georg der Andere [-] Es ist bekant, was vor eine Ost-Indische Handlungs-Compagnie zu Altona anzulegen, und Actien daraus zu machen projectiret worden [-]". Hannover den 1. Junii 1728. (Hannover, n.p., 1728). Large oblong folio. 1 Leaf, ca. 41 x 34 cm.

Very rare broadside warning and forbidding potential investors about buying shares in the 'Ost-Indische Handlungs-Compagnie zu Altona'. In 1728, under Frederick IV of Denmark (1699-1730) efforts were made to establish an East Indian trading company in Altona, then Danish territory. This was prevented by the Netherlands, England and France in order to protect their own successful trade with China. In the present broadside George II (1683-1760) warns against the imminent failure of the initiative and simply forbids any investments in the company. Any offender will face a fine of 4 times the amount of money which he invested. Consequent to the campaign, the Ost-Indische Handlungs-Compagnie zu Altona failed to raise sufficient capital to start a business. It was not until 1732 that Christian IV signed the charter for a successful 2nd initiative, the Danish Asiatic Company (Dansk Asiatisk Compagni) in Copenhagen, that would significantly stimulate the Danish trade with China, which had already existed since the 17th century. This charter was twice renewed, in 1772 and 1792. The present broadside is signed by Friedrich Wilhelm von Schlitz genannt von Görtz (1647-1728) the Privy Councilor to George I and II of Britain. He was President of the Chamber of Elector Georg Ludwig of Braunschweig and Lüneburg (Hanover), who as King George I (1660-1727) founded the Hanoverian line on the English throne. For routine matters, George I relied on his Chamber President Görtz, who was known as incorruptible and a great financial expert. - Some sm. faults, but - A good copy.

Description:
London: Alex Hogg, 1784 A very good copy in contemporary full calf binding. Originally issued in 60 parts, this work claims to be a comprehensive and accurate picture of Great Britain and Ireland. In reality the work mostly covers England with very small sections on everywhere else. There does not appear to be a definitive collation. There are directions to the binder but these number the contents 1-60, probably reflecting the 60 part issue and are very difficult to relate to the actual maps and scenes. This copy has: frontispiece; engraving to the preface; 2 folding maps of England and Wales; 29 single view plates; 52 double view plates; 4 triple view plates; 4 single page county maps; 12 double county map pages; 2 triple county map pages; 3 quad county map pages; and one page of portraits. The binding has been rebacked preserving the original spine and rebuilding the corners. It is in full calf with an intricate panelled diamond design to the boards, and with raised bands, title label and further… Read More

First edition. In 1623 Richard Jobson published an account of a 1620-1621 English voyage up River Gambia, during which a party, led by himself, penetrated to a point some 460 miles up river. The purpose of the voyage was to make contact with the gold trade of the West African interior, but in this there was little success. However, Jobson's account of the river, its commerce, natural history, peoples, religions, and politics, was the earliest to appear in print, in this fullness of detail, in any language. it was also the earliest detailed account of any part of Black Africa, by an Englishman. This internal disunity made the Georgians easy victims of the power politics of the neighboring Ottoman and Safavid empires, and by the end of the century the southward drive of the Russians intensified the struggle for military and diplomatic control over the whole of the Caucasian isthmus. Description:
Indianapolis: Dog Ear Publishing, January 2013. Trade Paperback. Fine. Slight reading wear to corners, otherwise pristine. Not from a library. No remainder mark. Not clipped. Not damaged. Suitable for gifting. 163 pages. The 25 authors of this book were volunteers in the first Peace Corps rural community development project in Africa: Sierra Leone, 1965-67. They are also the first group to tell a collective story of Peace Corps volunteers, anywhere. The Peace Corps was in its infancy then, and memories of John Kennedy were strong among the young volunteers. Sierra Leone was also in its infancy in the first few years after independence, before military coups and tribal warfare became common. The authors forthrightly recount their feelings of loneliness and isolation, and their frightening experiences with secret societies and witchcraft, but their uniquely optimistic "can-do" American attitude brought most through a great life experience.
