About This Item

NY: Century Co, 1933. Cox, Palmer. Octavo. (x), 246pp. Copiously illustrated by Palmer Cox. This was the first adventure of the Brownies written in prose, and it is advertised as having "a detailed, connected story, with a beginning, a middle and an end." A later issue, with the text, binding, and dust jacket all produced at different times. The disparate dates are typical of this period, as publishers contracted with different printers over time as they moved stock. Text block is the original 1918 first edition sheets. Bound in buff cloth, with the title and author's name to both spine and upper cover in dark blue; publisher printed on tail of spine as "Appleton Century." The Century Company merged with D. Appleton & Company in 1933. In dust jacket, lettered in dark blue, with publisher as "The Century Co." The back of the dust jacket advertises Century Juveniles, all of which were published in 1925, including the last of the original Brownie books, "The Brownies in Fairyland." This copy is in fine condition, with a short repaired tear to front flyleaf and scant foxing to edges of text block. Dust jacket shows only faint foxing, infinitesimal chips to corners, and four small tears, each clean and less than half an inch in length. A remarkably fine copy of this later Brownie title, rarely seen with a dust jacket in such fine condition.
