Good brown tooled boards with complete gilt lettering and landscape scene. Leather spine has complete label but most of the leather is worn and rubbed away. Binding of this large heavy book is surprisingly solid although some mild cracking. No writings. Chipping to spine heel. All plates present and in very good or better condition, containing well over one hundred illustrations. Important historical and genealogical reference. The author Gilbert was a resident of Walla Walla, Washington and a noted historian. Illustrated by Alfred Burr whose sketches depict properties and landscapes of Walla Walla County. The author's intent was to provide "a glimpse of the Coast from its discovery; of California until Oregon ceased to be a part of it; of Oregon while Washington Territory was within her boundary limits; of the latter… Read More

Graff 4677. Adams Six Guns 2401: "Rare." Being a British biography of Buffalo Bill. A very early Buffalo Bill item from the first European tour of the Wild West Show. Ramon Adams says, "This is said to be the rarest book about Buffalo Bill..." A small portion of the spine title missing, faint evidence of an old corner creases to bottom edge of front and rear covers, top edges of front and rear covers have small corner chips, and minor occasional wear to a few page fore-edges, else a very good copy, housed in a cloth slipcase.

London: Printed for James Rivington and James Fletcher, 1759 First edition in English of the first history of California, which "gave the English-speaking world its earliest thorough account of the little-known areas of the west coast of North America," (Hill). The original Spanish edition was published in 1757. . Contemporary tree calf neatly rebacked to style preserving the original red and green spine labels. Spine stamped in gilt and with raised bands. Two volumes, octavo. With four engraved plates (including both frontispieces) and a folding map of Baja California. The plates in volume one are "Women of California" and "Men of California" (frontispiece); plus "The Cayote or Fox" and "The Taye or California Deer." The plates in volume two are "The Manner of Curing the Sick in California" and "Sorcerers of California" (frontispiece); plus "The Martyrdom of Father Carranco" and "The Martyrdom of Father Tamaral." In Vol. one there is a small tear to the title page, stains and a small edge tear. Page 12 has a small hole and two small edge tears. Page 171 has a small edge tear. Page 179 has a tear at the top of the page with loss of a few letters. In Vol. Two page 327 has a trim to the top of the page. Page 347-350 have small corner tears without loss of text. The binding shows light wear and edge rubbing. Both volumes are bound with all pages right-side up and in order, unlike many copies. Overall very good.
