Everyone who reads it should be inspired to a higher life and a deeper appreciation of his heritage. Its chief merit lies in the fact that these exciting expenences in the life of Buffalo Jones are true. The fate of man is often determined by chance or opportunity. So it was with Buffalo Jones. Had he been born ten years earlier, his noble life might have been sacrificed to the Civil War, as was the case of two of his brothers. Had his birth occurred twenty years later he could not have saved the American Bison from extinction. So this book is no less a memorial to theperiod of history in which Jones lived than it is to Jones, himself. There were, however, three factors in the character of Jones which seem to account for his brilliant career: adventure, courage and integrity. He was the product of heredity and environment——plus the will to pursue a chosen course. From his earliest years he seemed to be possessed by the awe and wonderment of nature. His soul was thrilled by both the animate andinanimate world. Forests, hills, rocks, rivers and even the monotonous Kansas plains with their challenging mirage, were objects of his worship. Such an enviroment, with its living creatures, was paradise enough for Buffalo Jones. However, it was courage that enabled him to rope a full-grown mountain lion m the Grand Canyon; it was courage that took him two hundred miles beyond the Arctic Circle to capture alive the rare species of musk ox; it was courage that took him to the jungles of Africa to lasso the most ferocious wild animals. When a succession of dry years caused him to lose a six digit fortune at Garden City, Kansas, it was couragethat sent him to the Cherokee Outlet where he won land in the greatest race recorded by man. Integrity might well have been his middle name. Research for details of his conduct only emphasize this important virtue.
