Small octavo : pp. 4 blank (28) 436, 2 blank : new eps : gilt dentelles with floral motif : polished calf boards with triple gilt ruled border surrounding a floral and foliate border : rebacked with red leather title panel lettered in gilt and the publication year in gilt to tail of spine. Long note in small hand to first blank detailing the purchase of the volume in 1840 and some notes on the poet : trimmed at the head of the leaves : corners slightly rounded and gilt worn in patches but mostly bright. Thomas Randolph (1605-1635) was a poet, playwright and wit of great promise who was expected by many to become poet laureate after his mentor Ben Johnson. New York: Longman's Green and Company, 1933. First Edition First Printing . Hardcover. Very Good/Good. Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. Folio. 53 pages. SIGNED BY CLARE LEIGHTON ON THE HALF TITLE. Hardcover bound in original full black cloth with cover design and lettering in gilt and housed in the original publisher's slipcase with an orange printed label on the front panel. The slipcase is rubbed, scuffed and bumped. Scuffing and soiling to the paper label. The opening of the slipcase shows some abrasions and wear, but the edges of the slipcase are sound. The binding of the book shows some wear and has bumped corners and dulled spotting to the spine and hinges. A sound copy with secure inner hinges. Patterned endpapers. The text is clean. Stated First Edition on the copyright page. No dust jacket; our "Good" designation for the jacket pertains to the slipcase (worn but solid). Leighton's first and most desirable book. Signed copies are extremely difficult to find.

Hardcover bound in original full taupe publisher's cloth. The binding has been rebacked with the original spine laid down and with the corners reinforced. New endpapers. A sound copy; the binding is a little tight. Text is toned. Complete with the frontis portrait and a large folding color map. A piece of paper (the 20th century binder's notes) were taped onto the Dedication page resulting in browning on that page and the facing page. This shows up a bit on the title page as well.

Hardcovers bound in quarter leather and marbled paper-covered boards. The bindings are quite worn, scuffed and bumped, but the bindings are sound. An ex-library set with full markings. Removed shelf labels from the spines and paper label on the front covers. Ink stamps on the title pages (one from Austria and one in Russian). The title labels on the spines are worn with two showing heavy chipping and pest damage. In Volume IV, there are burn marks at the tops of pages 229-239 with some loss of text (heavy loss on the last fe3w pages. The text blocks are quite sound. A scarce early work on Napoleon. No other copies online; no auction records found.

Walter Herries (or Harris) was a pamphleteer who participated in the first Darien "adventure." Upon his return to England, he was offered inducements by English politicians to write a book that would ruin the reputation of the members of the Darien Company. His book was "Declared by a royal proclamation to be a 'false, scandalous, and traitorous libel'."

This book, attributed to Ridpath, is an answer to Herries's book, and an attack on English politicians. Ridpath was a Scottish journalist who wrote and supported Whig interests against the Tories.
