At the time of publication the railroad had the third largest revenue of US railroads, and was the sixth largest US industrial corporation. The Sacramento shopkeepers who built the railroad were, of course, the Big Four: Charles Crocker, Mark Hopkins, Collis P. Huntington and Leland Stanford.
