Hornsea: The Bull Terrier Club, 1995. Illustrated wraps, oblong 8vo, 68 pages, black-and-white photos, drawings, and art reproductions; frontispiece ("Weller -- Custodian of the Peace") and back cover illustration ("Puppy") by Alfred Munnings; foreword by George Jarrett, BTC president (1991-94). A tribute to the bull terriers who served with Great Britain's armed forces during World War II. The section on the land war opens with Rudyard Kipling's "Garm--The Hostage" (illustrated by Cecil Aldin, and acknowledging the breed in earlier conflicts) and includes "Army Dogs Today" by Major Hepworth RAVC, "Don B. T." by J. R. Weeks, "The Four-Legged Major" by Brian Kenway, "Major N.Z. Division Cavalry, 2nd N.Z.E.F." by Quita Youatt, "Major Major" by David Harris, and "Bull Terriers of Vienna" by Helga Döbrentey. The air war includes "Training" by Col. James Baldwin, "The Flying Fifi" by Raymond Baxter, "Bull Terrier Pilot Under Instruction" and "Remember" (full-page illustrations by Cynthia Lord-Ruddy), "Letter from Bob Davis" on his bull terriers and Royal Air Force years; "Ormandy's Dogs of War" by Brian Kenway, and "William" by Sheila Burnford, recalling a wartime bull terrier on the home front. The bull terrier also served "At Sea," as the editor's opening essay attests in a section that includes "Dog Nelson, A.B." by the Rev. David Campbell, "Bill" by Peter Garnier and "Bill's Chronicle" by Jill Garnier, "Ch. Faithfield Royal Sovereign" by Tony Coupe, as well as photos taken aboard H.M.S. Hood, one of H.R.H. Princess Anne and her husband, Cmdr. Tim Laurence, and their bull terrier, and a moving portrait, "On Watch." No. 327 of 1,000 copies. Inscribed by the editor. Very good condition (tissue overlay, BTC notice laid in).
