Minneapolis: Lund Press. Very Good. 1937. First Edition; First Printing. Soft Wrappers. Autograph; 96 pages; SIGNED by the author on limitation page [only five hundred copies]; inscribed to Rowland Evans. Quite scarce. Frontispiece photograph of the author/biographee. Six loose octavo gatherings of 16 pages each, plus the frontispiece portrait; original signatures were never stitched or bound. Memoirs of Edward Williams Decker (1869-1956), the president of the Northwest National Bank in Minneapolis from 1912 to 1934. Edward W. Decker and his family figured prominently in the Minneapolis social and business world. The first Dekker arrived from Holland in America in the 17th century and was appointed Vice Governor of New Amsterdam. In the late 1850s, Jacob and Mary Decker (Edward's parents) made their way west to the small community of Austin in Mower County (Minnesota). Jacob was a successful wheat farmer. Edward Decker grew up on the farm, but eventually sought his fortune in Minneapolis, where he rose from bank clerk to the position of bank president. "... in spite of the high position he has attained he never holds himself aloof from the most humble. He is the most approachable of men, mixes with all classes of citizens and is as cordial toward the poorest patron of the bank as the wealthiest and most important." In 1913, Purcell and Elmslie built a summer residence in the Prairie School style for Edward W. Decker, a Minneapolis banker, on a wooded lot on Lake Minnetonka. Much of the lower level had an open plan, because the Deckers wanted a large area suitable for dancing. The architects were pleased to receive the commission. "It was our first opportunity in Minneapolis to do a distinguished and extensive layout," Purcell later wrote, "and Mr. Decker spent all the money that was necessary to make our architectural theses complete in all its detail." [pp. 40ff] Decker enjoyed the house for twenty years, but had to sell it due to financial difficulties during the Great Depression. This copy inscribed to Rowland Evans, political columnist and television journalist, likely came about through Evans' relationship with Katherine "Kay" Winton, whom he married. Katherine "Kay" Winton grew up in Minnesota outside Minneapolis on the shore of Lake Minnetonka. Her father David J. Winton was president of the Winton Lumber Company and likely in the same social set as the Deckers. ; Signed by Author .
