ont> William and Robert Chambers : London, 1860 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. An excellent copy of this beautifully illustrated work of noted entomologist J. O. Westwood, featuring hand-coloured plates by the author. This uncommon 1860 imprint of John Obadiah Westwood's popular work contains beautiful hand-coloured plates with their original tissue guards intact alongside detailed scientific studies of butterflies found throughout the British Isles at the time of publication. Westwood, a former president of the Entomological Society of London, showcases an attention to detail with this book, developed to be a useful tool for any student of lepidopterology of the day. This impressive cataloguing of the British species from caterpillar to butterfly also includes the author's thoughts on fellow entomologists' theories, the habits of the birds that eat his beloved insects, and how an aspiring aurelian can foresee weather suitable for field work. With 19 plates with light pencil annotations, collation complete. A complete work, The Butterflies of Great Britain with their Transformations Delineated and Described is as appealing to naturalists for the gorgeous plates as for Westwood's comprehensive writings. Condition: In the publisher's original cloth binding with gilt stamped decorations to the front board and spine. Rebacked, with the original spine laid down, and the boards preserved. Externally, generally smart with some patches of light rubbing to the extremities. The occasional mark to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean. Overall Condition: Very Good Indeed.
