About This Item

London: Sampson Low, Marston & Co., Ltd., [1932]. Tall 8vo. ix, [3], 274 pp. Red cloth, black lettering on spine (very slight foxing to fore-edges, minor bumping to couple corners), w/ d.j. cover art of legionnaire reaching through the prison bars by F.H. Warren (minor chipping head & foot of spine, couple minor closed tears, slight creasing, price-clipped), VG/VG- copy. First edition of this scarce and gritty cautionary fictional tale on the French Foreign Legion, by a Legionnaire who was with the 4th Squadron of the 1st Foreign Legion Cavalry in Syria from 1924 to 1926, during the Great Syrian Revolt. The authors had also collaborated on the memoirs, Twixt Hell and Allah (1931) and later Five sous a day (1933) detailing the authors experiences after Waterhouse was wounded, and the incompetence of the French military and medical system encountered along the way from Syria to Sousse. He was eventually able to capitalize on his experiences by donning his Legion uniform during previews of the 1926 silent film, Beau Geste and tell the audience of the harsh discipline and savage desert fighting. Exceedingly rare in original dustjacket, and was one of three fictional tales by the pair, including Bloodspots in the Sand, and Oasis. Worldcat locates 2 copies (British Library, Staatsbibliothek Berlin); See: Jack Wanger, Mon Legionnaire, Twixt Hell and Allah (2016).
