About This Item

London, 1950. 1 1/2 pages. on recto and verso of quarto sheet (193 x 160mm). Folded for mailing, paperclip mark in left margin, a few smudges, but very good. This query was likely sent in the course of West's work on his 1951 book, WRITTEN BY HAND, which treats, in part, the distinctive handwriting of eminent figures in arts, letters, etc. Shaw, no doubt in direction to his secretary, Blanche Patch, for his response, has written across the top of the letter in red ink: "Ask him is he a professional calligrapher." In an address before the Society for Italic Handwriting, Wilfrid Blunt asserted that "Mr. Aubrey West's WRITTEN BY HAND (1951) set the ball rolling. I think we owe an immense debt of gratitude to [him] ...he played a part in the revival that nobody else could have played...."
