1775 1ed John Wesley Calm Address to American Colonies TAXATION Samuel Johnson

An incredibly rare first edition of John Wesley's argument in favor of taxing the American colonies!

John Wesley was an English Anglican cleric and theologian. Wesley was one of the most important Anglican theologians and is most remembered for helping found Methodism. Many of Wesley's doctrines contrasted Whitefield's Calvinism and promoted his theology in his evangelism and missions. Wesley was an advocate for Arminianism, which strongly opposes Calvinism.

Wesley also was an active political advocate, supporting British parliament as well as the Church of England's rule in the American Colonies. From Abelove:

"About the last week of September 1775, John Wesley published 'A Calm Address to Our American Colonies'. In it he argued that 'the supreme power in England' had a clear, legal right to tax the colonies and that the Americans who thought otherwise and were 'all in an uproar' had been misled by a small cabal of designing Englishmen. What these Englishmen secretly hoped to do was overthrow the monarchy, and they were fomenting civil unrest in American and in England, too, as a means to that end. If the Americans wanted to be sensible, they would stop acting as dupes of the cabal and quietly pay their taxes."

Sabin notes on this work that it is,

"a condensation without acknowledgment of Dr. [Samuel] Johnson's 'Taxation no Tyranny'.

Description:
1681 DUTCH Neyn Voyages BRAZIL America INDIANS Florida Ceremony Rituals Funerals
Pieter de Neyn's "Lust-hof der Huwelyken" is a late 17th-century treatise on the ceremonial customs and rites of weddings and funerals from around the world. Neyn covers numerous cultures including natives of Brazil, Native American Indians, Southern Asia, and India, as well as African tribes. Neyn also gives attention to notable Dutch voyagers including Jan Huyghen van Linschoten.
However, the greatest appeal of this work is Neyn's consideration of the Americas. According to Sabin, this work
"[known as] The Pleasant Matrimonial Garden, treats the following American tribes: Appalachians, Brazilians, Inhabitants of Guiana, Florida, Ingas (i.e. Incas), New-Netherland, New-France, Virginia."
A highly desirable and rare 1681 first edition, complete with full-page engravings!

Pherotee La Croix's "Universal Relation of Africa" is a famous 17th-century history of Africa. La Croix was a professor of geography in Lyon whose work on Africa became a lasting authority of African geography and history. However, much of La Croix's "Afrique" was heavily inspired by Dutch author Olfert Dapper's "Description of Africa".
Even still, La Croix's work is notable for the exquisite full-page and folding engravings as well as descriptions of some of the greatest mysteries of Africa including a section on Egyptian pyramids, the Sphinx, and mummies! Other topics include voyages to the Barbary coast, Tunisia, Algiers, and Morocco.
