London : Printed by F Collins, for A Swalle; and A & F Churchil; published by Edmund Gibson, 1695 A good copy of the 2nd edition in English, and the first Gibson edition of Camden's Britannia. In contemporary full leather binding with frontispiece, 50 maps by Robert Morden, 8 full page plates of coins, and 1 further full page plate. William Camden is said to be the first English topographer and the first issues of his work in latin (first edition with maps 1607) caused land disputes because the maps showed details of enclosures. This copy is in contemporary panelled calf with a new matching spine with 5 raised bands and red title label. It is in very good clean condition with expert repair to corners and new endpapers. The contents are complete and generally clean with the odd mark or stain. Classed as good overall because 3 of the maps and a few text pages have been added in from another 1695 source and the 3 maps have had some later hand colouring, and a number of maps have had repair. Contents: frontispiece; title; dedication; preface with adverts on final page; life of Camden; Camden's preface; ad lectorem; catalogue; Antonine itinerary; chapters; text in double columns with 8 pp of coins and 2 fold out maps - pp i-cxcv. Half title with blank to verso; text in double columns with 44 county maps, 1 map of England, 1 full page of engravings and engravings in the text eg of Stonehenge pp 1-875. Half title; text with 3 maps pp 883-1116; Annals of Ireland 18 pp finis; index 24 pp; appendix 2 pp finis. The frontispiece has loss to the gutter and has been relaid; there is a paper hole approx 2 cm x 1 cm at p 182 with small loss of text; pp 309-316 and the final 10 pp of index plus the appendix have a smaller bottom margin; p 806 has some loss to the bottom margin; there is a little worming in the gutter around p 902; and the appendix has paper repair. Of the maps: Cornwall has a repaired tear; Hampshire has some repair and loss at the gutter; Chester and Herefordshire have minor repair; Middlesex, North Yorkshire and Cumberland have some hand colouring; Kent has been relaid with some loss; Norfolk has lost the right hand margin; West Yorkshire has repair; North Wales has repair. Cantabrigiae [Cambridge] : John White, 1622 A fair to good copy of the scarce 1st edition with map, in contemporary full leather binding. The binding has wear to spine joints, the top and bottom of the spine and edges, but is of good quality leather and would repair well. Page edges red. Internally there is an armorial bookplate of the Kinnaird family to the front pastedown and a signature of James West, clearly an early owner, on the fep.James has made some notes about the elections to Parliament for the County of Leicester in 1775. The fep has a tear at the top. Description:
London : W. Nicoll, 1769 A good copy of a very scarce work, originally issued as part of a two volume work called 'The City Remembrancer'. This consisted of 3 books, with separate title pages and pagination, on the Great Plague, Fire and Storm of London. The title page for the 'Remembrancer' states that the source material for the work is Dr Gideon Harvey's papers. Dr Harvey ?1640-?1700 became the king's 'Physician to the Tower'. He is known for a variety of medical works (and for using his writing to discredit other physicians). This copy has been rebound by Bath Municipal Reference Library, and is in a near fine buckram cloth binding with gilt title, reference number and date to spine. The internal endpaper joints are reinforced and there is the armorial library bookplate to the fep, together with some reference numbers at the top. There are no other library markings. The binder has introduced a new front blank and has probably misbound the Introduction, which should… Read More

Description:
London: Alexander Hogg, 1790 A good copy in recent quarter leather binding, with frontispiece, folding map of England and Wales, maps of Scotland and Ireland, and 103 further full page plates. Like many attempts to cover 'earliest history' to 'the present day', this is somewhat sketchy on the early sections, but increasingly detailed almost to a diary approach on 'the present day'. This is a later edition - undated - but the last entry is for June 10th 1790. The author simply added pages to update so although the text pagination runs to p714, the index section starts at p709 reflecting the smaller initial version. Known particularly for its lavish engravings - especially the later ones covering the American War of Independence. This copy has been recently rebound: the binding has a leather spine and title label and marbled boards and is in very good condition. New endpapers. Contents with frontispiece, title page, dedication, table, preface with decorative tailpiece, folding… Read More

Description:
LONDON: J Wilcox , 1732 First edition of Coker's Survey of Dorsetshire - with the original county map and 6 copper plates of Arms as called for. Stated to have been written originally by Thomas Gerrard in the 1620's and then first published by Coker in 1732. In contemporary full leather binding with newer spine with gilt titles. With title page; dedication 1p; folding map of Dorsetshire; text with decorative head and tailpieces and initial capitals 128pp; Names of Persons/plate listing 4pp; 6 plates of Arms; Index 16pp; blank. The original leather boards have wear to corners and the newer spine (which is of poorer quality leather) has fraying at the top and bottom and some wear along the spine joints - particularly the front joint. The contents are very clean and in good order with just the occasional mark. The map has a crease from poor folding but is complete and clean. The endpapers have some marking and the front endpaper has not been repaired along the joint when the new spine was added.

Description:
Oxford: Printed at the Theater, 1686 A good copy in full leather binding with map, 26 folding and 11 single page plates. With the Copy of the Proposals and list of subscribers, but lacking the Arms Omitted. The binding, with blind stamped lining to boards, raised bands and title label to spine, is in very good clean condition. The spine has been relaid, but the boards do not look contemporary so this could be a later binding which has itself been repaired. There is a little scuffing to the boards but little significant wear. New endpapers have been added, replacing damaged and heavily marbled ones (? late victorian). The contents have been trimmed at some time (it is now on the quarto/folio border), but all page edges are red and the trimming does not look recent. The trimming is particularly obvious in the subscribers list. Overall the contents are in good condition, with most text pages and many plates being bright and clean. However significant paper repair was carried out at one time using tape… Read More

Description:
This book is in fairly good condition. There is some wear on the front, back, edges, and spine of the cover boards, as well as spots on the outside back cover board. There is minimal bumping and fraying on the cover boards. The pages are yellowing and tanning, with some vertical fraying and warping, but the pages are clear of markings. A few of the pages are dog-eared and edges torn. "The Forsyte Saga was the title originally destined for that part of it which is called 'The Man of Propery; and to adopt it for the collected chronicles of the Forsyte family has indulged the Forsytean tenacity that is in all of us. The word Saga might be objected to on the ground that it connotes the heroic and that there is little of heroism in these pages. But it is used with a suitable irony; and, after all, this long tale, though it may deal with folk in frock coats, furbelows, and a gilt-edged period, is not devoid of the essential heat of conflict. Discounting for the gigantic stature and blood-thirstiness of… Read More
