New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1926. . First American Edition. Octavo; original yellow cloth, paper title label on spine panel, top edges trimmed and stained dark blue, others untrimmed. 277 pp, Frontispiece and seven additional full-paged plates on glazed paper inserted in the text and not included in the pagination. Spine label darkened, tiny bump to spine; otherwise a basically fine copy in a slightly chipped dust jacket, some chips from upper rear panel, small chips from the spine extremities, some short tears along edges. Still, a decent looking copy in the dust jacket. Goldstone & Sweetser 33c.
¶ On January 1st, 1753, a maidservent, Elizabeth Canning by name, disappeared from her master's house in Aldermanbury. She returned a month later, but to this day no one has been able to discover whither she went, or why. She claimed to have been abducted, but there was no viable evidence of such. One of the most remarkable causes celèbres of the Eighteenth Century, here examined in depth by Mr. Machen.
