Based in an episode from Benoit de Sainte-Maure's Roman de Troie, Chaucer's version, probably written between 1372 and 1386, contains some 8200 lines of rhyme royal. The poet enriches the story from Boccaccio with the humorous figure of Pandarus and by development of Cressida's (Griseida's) character. Wood engravings by Eric Gill. As well as the occasional full-page illustration, each page has a floral-and-faunal border. Dj worn, spine bleached; good+. stock#27816x.

Gilt cover design. Original Eric Gill engravings are reproduced. Limited to 1980 numbered and 25 lettered copies of which this is copy 580. 31.5 x 19.5 cm. 766pp. AEG, ribbon marker. Also included is the 48pp essay volume by Peter Holliday, "The Golden Cockerel Press, The Canterbury Tales & Eric Gill". Both are housed in a black clamshell box.
