- Hardcover
Contains 15 full page chromolithograph illustrations, plus one facsimile replacement and sepia monotint illustrations on all other pages. Typically moral victorian children's story about a young boy from Cape Town who goes to live with his relatives in England after his mother dies. After a series of misadventures, including some cruelty to animals, he's rescued from death by a dog and everyone lives happily ever after. Very nicely presented with Alice Havers contributing the chromolithographs and Ernest Wilson [EW] responsible for the monotints which appear on every page. The text is printed within a tan block on each page. Paper covered glazed boards with tan cloth backstrip. Illustrations on both boards with gilt decoration to upper. 255x190mm. 64pp. Corners worn; edges and top / tail of backstrip rubbed. Front & rear hinges cracked but binding holding. Contents clean. Unfortunately one of the original colour illustrations is missing and this has been replaced by a double sided facsimile replacement of the entire page. This is what makes the overall grading 'fair', othewise the contents is really Good Plus.
