London: J. Wilkes, 1800. Very good condition. An engraved portrait of Captain Cook, turned slightly right, wearing a naval uniform and wig, after the original by Dance.
Featuring a rectangular vignette underneath the oval portrait, depicting Cook just before his death in Hawaii, his arm raised to stop his soldiers from firing at the crowd of native Hawaiians.
Engraved by John Chapman (active 1792-1823), one of the most gifted stipple engravers of the late eighteenth century, of many contemporary personnages of Australian interest.
4 1/2 x 6 1/2", with wide margins. Lower left below portrait: J. Chapman. Lower center below the title: London Publish'd as the Act directs, Septr. 20, 1800, by J. Wilkes. Slight edge toning. Beddie 3264.
