London: Elliot Stock, 1893. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 8 x 11 in. lvi, 400 pp. Original green cloth boards with gilt signature on front. Frontis and other plates, 4 fold-out maps/chart plates, with three folding maps in rear pocket. Condition is VERY GOOD ; front inner joint is started with the paper broken inside but the muslin and cloth tapes are undamaged. The fold-out plates and three folding maps are present, one folding map, of the East Australian Coastine North sheet, has some teensy tears at a couple of folds, Soth sheet has a few light stains . Covers clean, corners and spine ends worn, spine is a bit toned with the remains of a small paper label at head. Period engraved bookplate of a PO on the front pastedown. Text bright and unmarked. At pg. 252 and after the pgs have not been cut. RRGR

The first voyage of James Cook was a combined Royal Navy and Royal Society expedition to the south Pacific Ocean aboard HMS Endeavour, from 1768 to 1771. It was the first of three Pacific voyages of which Cook was the commander. The aims of this first expedition were to observe the 1769 transit of Venus across the Sun (3 - 4 June of that year), and to seek evidence of the postulated Terra Australis Incognita or "unknown southern land".
