CAPTAINS OF SOULS ..

by Wallace, Edgar

Condition: See description

Boston: Small, Maynard and Company Publishers, [1922].. Octavo, pp. [1-6] 1-362, original red cloth, front and spine panels stamped in gold, fore-edge rough trimmed. First edition. "Ambrose Sault finds a quasi-scientific way to insert his soul into another man's body before he is hanged for murder. The novel is long and breezy and a bit confusing, a comedy of manners at some points, a melodrama at others." - Robert Eldridge. The first UK edition appeared the following year from John Long. Bleiler (1978), p. 202 (coding "Personality Exchange). Reginald 14792. Hubin, p. 831. Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy (III), p. 83, calling this "one of the scarcer of the 1920s Wallace hardbacks"; from the author's inscription on his copy he inferred "that Wallace regarded this work as his first attempt at serious fiction." Front free endpaper missing, gold spine lettering tarnished, else a very good, clean copy. (#148133)
