Goupil, Paris, 1880; Woodburytype photograph by Etienne Carjat of Jules Arsene Arnaud Claretie (1840-1913), author, dramatist, and director of the Theatre Francais from 1885 until his death. Claretie authored three operas for Jules Massenet: "La Navarraise," "Therese," and "Amadis." Photo measures 6 1/4" x 7 3/4", mounted on 11" x 14" card. Accompanied by four 11" x 14" pages of background and analytical text by Rene Delorme, in French. From the eminent French 19th century "Galerie Contemporaine" photographic collection of leading figures from the arts, sciences, and politics, published by Goupil and issued in parts from 1876 to 1884. Fine condition. Some light foxing of the text pages only.
