London: Blackie & Son, 1880. 1st . Three-Quarter Leather. Very Good. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. First printing, this revised and enlarged version, originally published in 1857. Pp. 254 + C (100) plates, printed recto only, folio format (14" tall) in original three-quarters binding with black leather, five raised bands, spine label on red leather, decorated in gilt. Small label "Bound by Blackie and Son" inside rear board. A superb copy with no owner's name, very firm original binding, minimal wear/scuffing to covers (not worn through at tips). Front free endpaper is creased. Some foxing to front and rear blank leaves. One or two spots to the title page, last few plates affected in a minor way. Photos available.

Folio, Best Edition, with 100 engraved plates and many hundreds of wood-engraved illustrations in the text, neat contemporary signature on front free endpaper; attractively bound in black half calf, brown cloth sides, back with five raised bands tooled in gilt, second compartment with red leather label lettered and ruled in gilt, red sprinkled edges, backstrip lightly scuffed at edges else a remarkably well-preserved, bright, crisp copy. Lovely copy of the best edition of this immensely detailed manual, first published in 1857. In this edition several of the plates have been improved by the introduction of new figures, and several new plates added. SCARCE IN THIS CONDITION.
