[Cartography - Surveying] Dou, Jan Pietersz. & Johann Sems. Practijck des landmetens. Leerende alle rechte ende kromzydige landen, bosschen, boomgaerden, ende andere velden meten [-]; Van het ghebruyck der geometrische instrumenten; [Contemporary bound with an other 3rd. title than usual:] Tractaet vant maken ende gebruycken eens nieu gheordonneerden mathematischen instruments. Amsterdam, Willem Jansz [Blaeu], op het water inde Sonnewijser/ Willem Janssen op 't water inde vergulde Sonnewijser, (1620; 1620); 1620. 421,(3); 70 pp. With 3 separate titles, the first 2 works continuously numbered, however with 2 identical engraved title-illustrations, 7 folding etched plates and numerous woodcut text-illustrations. Contemporary red pigskin, giltlettered and gilt decorated in compartments.
Good copy of an influentual work on surveying and cartography by the one of the best Dutch surveyors Jan Pietersz. Dou (1615-1682) together with Johannes Sems (1572-before 1652) and published by the famous Dutch cartographer and publisher Willem Jansz. Blaeu (1571-1638). Simon The first edition was published in 1600 and Simon Stevin used this work for training engineers in all the aspects of surveying. Our copy is not as usual bound together with Sybrant Hansz' geometrical 'questions and answers', as mentioned is on the first title, but with another work by Dou, that was first published in 1620. This 'Tractaet vant maken ende gebruycken ...' describes his newly invented surveying instrument, the socalled 'Cirkel van Dou' or 'Hollandse Cirkel', that would become the most used Dutch surveying instrument for over 200 years. Some signs of use, mainly in the beginning (occ. thumbed), but - A good copy.
