Charnock, J. A. History of Marine Architecture. Including an enlarged and progressive View of the Nautical Regulations and Naval History, both Civil and Military, of all Nations, especially of Great Britain. London, R. Faulder (ao), 1800-1802. 1st. ed. 3 Vols. Large 4to. ca. 30 x 24 cm. 100,368; 496; 436 pp. Engraved frontispice, 99 aquatint and engraved plates, incl. some large folding, after Van de Velde and others. Beautiful 19th C. bindings: Uniform h.calf, spines richly gilt with 2 morocco letterpieces.

A very good copy of the first edition of "The most authoritative book on 18th century ship-building published in England" (Abbey), written by John Charnock (1756-1807), member of the Royal Navy and author of several highly esteemed works on marine history and ship-building. The present work offers a broad historic overview not only of English, French, Dutch shipbuilding, but includes also the Asian and the Pacific region.

Our copy with an albumen photograph (27.5 x 21cm.) of the "HMS Asia" mounted at blank page the end of vol. 3, and on its facing page a manuscript note on the history of that ship by its midshipman Thomas William Oliver, dated November 1892. The HMS Asia was an 84-gun ship of the Royal Navy, launched in 1824 at Bombay Dockyard. It was the British admiral Codrington's flagship at the naval Battle of Navarino during the Greek War of Independence (1821-1832); Active in the Syria campaign against Mehemet Ali, in the Eastern Mediterranean (1840-1841). In 1858 the ship was converted to serve as a guardship, and finally sold out of the navy in 1908.

A working manuscript, with erasures, alterations and cancellations. Together with: A copy of the published full score of the movement, i.e., pp. 107-138, and a 1-1/2 page printed commentary by the composer discussing the background of the work and briefly describing the music: "I should say, however, that as I was working on the last movement, I found myself thinking as much about the fox as about the hunting hounds. This, coupled with the fact that I recently acquired a recording of background music from the old movie serials that I used to go to as a kid, probably accounts for the quite ungentlemanly, almost lurid quality of the chase music." "Thurber's Dogs was commissioned for the ProMusica Chamber Orchestra of Columbus and the Thurber House to commemorate the 100th birthday anniversary of author James Thurber. London: Printed for Henry Sampson Woodfall in Pater Noster Row, 1773. Small octavo. Two volumes. Leather bound in full period calf unlettered with gilt fillets. Rubbing to corners and minor spotting and toning throughout, else near-fine.. A superb copy of the collected edition of the Junius Letters. Originally published in the London Public Advertiser from January 21, 1769 to January 21, 1772 under the pseudonym "Junius," the so-called "Junius Letters" were polemical letters directed to, and highly critical of, the government of King George III. In the letters, Junius poured brilliant and slanderous invective upon Tory-minded English ministers on account of various public policies that allegedly ruined England and drove the American colonies toward rebellion. The letters were widely regarded as polemical masterpieces by English and American observers, and they were widely reprinted in English and colonial newspapers, lending moral support to the early revolutionary cause in America. Signed and dated New York, Jan-April 1997. Supreme Virtue was commissioned by the Dale Warland Singers with the support of the Jerome Foundation and the Alice M. Ditson Fund of Columbia University. The Dale Warland Singers premiered the work in Minneapolis in June 2000. The text consists of an English translation by Stephen Mitchell of verses from the "Tao te Ching." It was first recorded by the Seattle-based chamber choir Esoterics on the Terpsichore label in the winter of 2008. "For a few years I was the tenor section leader of a choir in Washington, and in singing with and composing for them I'd become more and more interested in the quasi-instrumental vocal gesture. Stephen Mitchell's pellucid translation of this verse of the Tao te ching - a series of moral challenges all beginning with the words "Can you?" - spurred me to… Read More

Description:
London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1910. First edition, only printing. Paperback. This is the first edition, first state of this striking, scarce, and fragile early collection of Churchill's speeches. In 1904, Churchill quit the Conservative Party and joined the Liberals, beginning a dynamic chapter in his political career that saw him champion progressive causes and be branded a traitor to his class. In 1910, when The People's Rights was published, Winston Churchill was a powerful political force and a member of the Cabinet. From December 3-11, 1909 Churchill was on the campaign trail on behalf of the Liberals. The People's Rights is a distillation of these nine days of speeches, criticizing the House of Lords (which had rejected Liberal Government's budget, thus precipitating the campaign) and championing Free Trade, a graduated income tax, luxury tax, and surtaxes on unearned income. Churchill's efforts were not wasted; as a result of the election, the Liberals would achieve a slim majority and… Read More
