"Wolf-Man" was the pseudonym given to Sergei Pankejeff (1886-1979), a Russian aristrocrat and patient of Sigmund Freud (1856-1939), named thus because of a dream Pankejeff had in his childhood, of a tree full of white wolves; the dream would become significant in the development of Freud's theories, particularly of psychosexual development, although Freud's interpretations of the dream have since been criticised for lacking objective evidence as well as for the outcome of Freud's treatment of Pankejeff's mental illness. This Arion Press edition is illustrated by American Pop artist Jim Dine (b. 1935), with etchings and woodcuts that convey the artist's immersion into the character behind the work; Dine writes in the Artist's Statement, "When the Wolf-Man found me, he grabbed me by the back of my thick neck and told me his story. . . .For me, the privilege and the horror has been to look at the poor guy's wounds and report." Dine's prints contain forceful mark making and a chaotic darkness, delving into the mind and suffering of the patient Pankejeff. ___DESCRIPTION: Quarter black leather with brown cloth boards, illustration in black of a wolf and a boy on the front board, silver lettering on the spine, fore- and bottom edges uncut, frontispiece a black-and-white etching of Sigmund Freud by Jim Dine, title page in red and black with illustration of a wolf's head, printed in black and red throughout, six woodcuts and five etchings by Jim Dine (including frontispiece) throughout, printed in black, two with two colours, one tipped-in and one with tissue guard, all with captions on the verso; Century Old Style type, Johannot and T. H. Saunders Drawing papers, quarto size (12" by 9.75"), pagination: [1-4] 5-114 [115-116] [1 colophon], one of 276 copies, this number 129, signed by Jim Dine on the Artist's Statement page following the title page. With original subscriber's invoice loosely laid in, with two horizontal folds for mailing. Housed in a slipcase covered in black paper with brown cloth sides, with black paper spine label with silver lettering. ___CONDITION: A fine copy; the boards clean, the corners straight and unrubbed, the binding strong with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; the barest hint of soiling to the rear board, else fine. The subscriber's invoice is fine, clean and without wear.
