About This Item

New York, NY: Random House, 1957. Text/Bright, clean, sound As New w/short closed tear by spine (short of stitching) to rear endpaper.. Glazed illustrated boards/NF w/trace rubs to corner tips & upper/lower spine edges. First Edition, 3rd variant printing --- glazed boards accompanied by dust jacket with 195/195 on front inner flap, denoting final choice of boards and pricing. 200/200 on the inner flaps is a record of intitial marketing choice of regular paper covered boards at $2.00; the book was issued again w/paper covered boards without any numbers on the inner flap reflecting publisher's uncertainty over price and board treatment. This 3rd variant, identified by 195/195, records zeroing in on the price of $1.95 and committment to the more durable glazed boards better suited for little hands and fingers, paginated pages, and established the standard format for subsequent Cat in the Hat Beginner Reader Series. Art work remains constant. In essence, this 3rd Variant Edition is the definitive printing. This tall, skinny cat, sporting a signature red bow tie and red-and-white striped top hat, created and made famous both through verse and illustrations of Dr. Seuss (1904 - 1991), is friend to most American school children, and a real sense, spearheaded early reader books puntuated with wit and humor, and word play. The charming, action packed tale is told with 220 different words, all vocabulary recognizable by first and secondgraders. A cool cat that will reappear in subsequent rhymed stories by Seuss and become an emblem of a series of Beginner Books it spawned. Fine copy.. First Edition. Hard Cover/Stitched. NEAR FINE/Near Fine. Illus. by Dr. Seuss (Author-Illustrator).
