About This Item

New York, NY: Random House, 1957. [Children's reading book] FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, with all points present. Quarto (23 x 17cm), pp.62. Illustrated throughout. Bound in publisher's pictorial blue boards, in illustrated dust-jacket repeating the cover design. Some wear to extremities, corners lightly bumped, very light discolouration to front board. Textblock exceptionally clean and bright throughout; pencil inscription reading 'Anne May' to front pastedown, otherwise minimally used. Dust-jacket a little frayed to extremities, some creases and closed tears, minor loss at spine ends, panels unmarked. Most impressively, the dust-jacket is not price clipped, and retains the original $2 price (as 200/200) at corner. A very good copy of a rare book. See two siblings caught between the demands of a sensible goldfish, and irresponsible giant cat. Hirsch and Younger [7].

Synopsis

The Cat in the Hat is a children's book by Dr. Seuss, featuring a tall, anthropomorphic, mischievous cat, wearing a tall, red and white striped hat, and a bowtie. He also carries an umbrella. With the series of Beginner Books that The Cat inaugurated, Seuss promoted both his name and the cause of elementary literacy in the United States.
