About This Item

Cantabridgiae [Cambridge, Massachusetts]: Academiae Typographorum, Typis Welch, Bigelow, et Sociorum, 1866. In Latin. Published 1866. Handsomely bound copy of this record of Harvard students, faculty and alumni, with the alumni listing starting in 1642 and continuing through the publication date. Full crimson morocco leather with gilt spine lettering and decorated compartments, additional decoration in blind, slightly raised spine bands, marbled endpapers, 172 pages plus a 54 page index, a two page appeal (in English) for biographical information about alumni, and 48 page roll (in English) of students who served in the army or navy during the War of the Rebellion. Original wraps bound in, with a notation at the top of the original cover: Hon. James H. Mitchell, with the affectionate regards of his Brother S. L. Mitchell. Book also has the naval-themed personal bookplate of Theodore Winthrop Steadman (born in Shanghai, China; graduated from Harvard in 1933; with residences in Farmington, Connecticut and Fishers Island, New York at the time of his death in 2006) on the front pastedown. Very light rubbing to the covers, red color and gilt bright and unfaded, a few subtly darkened areas (like fingerprinting) to the covers, good hinges, firm text block, pages age-toned but clean, old archival repair and spotting to bound-in front cover, short closed tear to the title page of the military service roll.. Hard Cover. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
