A Tarrytown African American couple, William and Mary Taylor, freed slaves, donated their property as the site for the monument. The cornerstone was laid on Independence Day, July 4, 1853, with the marble quarried at Sing Sing (today Ossining). The volume includes the history of the movement to erect the monument (Part I), a description of the Centennial celebrations (Part II) and an Appendix. 8vo, 167pp, 2 b&w plates printed on photographic paper. Original brown pebbled cloth, with gilt title at spine. Spine chipped and cracked. First fascicle loose. Period owner signature at title page, Jas. T. Sutton, 1881.
