FIRST EDITIONS 1786-88. 3 volumes, complete set. 12mo, approximately 170 x 105 mm, 6¾ x 4 inches, pages: [2], v-xiv, 1-207; [4], v-ix, [2], 1-212; [4], v-xiv, 1-346, half-titles to Volumes II and III only, attractively bound in antique full tree calf, gilt decoration to spines, gilt lettered morocco labels. Extremities very lightly rubbed, tiny chip to head of spine on Volumes II and III, top corners slightly worn, small label of Easton Neston private library and armorial bookplate of Sir Thomas Hesketh former owner of Easton Neston on front pastedowns, occasional very slight pale foxing, a little neat underlining and some neat vertical lines in the margin, a few pointing hands, old ink note to 12 margins, neat ink correction to 1 page, small closed tear to 1 margin affecting 2 letters, repaired neatly with no loss, no ink marks or notes to Volume III except for 1 very small correction. Bindings tight and firm a very good set. John Holt has compiled his portraits of English sovereigns from King Alfred to Queen Anne from the works of historians of his day: David Hume's History of England from the Invasion of Julius Caesar to the Abdication of James the Second, Tobias Smollett's History of England, Gilbert Burnet's History of the Reformation in England, Catharine Macaulay and others. In his Preface Holt also acknowledges his debt to Anderson's Historical and Chronological Deductions. Her husband Joseph Morrell Dodge had a long and distinguished career and tried to help reform Europe but later wound up as financial advisor to Douglas MacArthur in the economic revitalization of Japan. This edition is in very good condition internally. Photos of Ikebana arrangements by the famous Japan Ikebana master. A gift given to Julia Jeffers Dodge and placed in her library. 38 single sided (double page but other side blank) on high quality Japan paper with photo examples of Ikebana, black and white. A rare publication.
