Chapel Hill, North Carolina, 1955. Hardcover. Very Good. Broadside certificate (10 ½" x 8"). Printed in black within a decorative border frame printed in blue. Signed by Christina Fuqua, President of the National Housewives League of America, and stamped with the blind-embossed seal of the National League. Toning to the edges of all four margins, which have been folded-in along the outside of the printed frame, else very good. Issued on 26 August, 1955 to certify the local Chapel Hill, North Carolina chapter membership in the National League. Established in 1933 as part of Booker T. Washington's National Negro Business League (NNBL), the National Housewives' League encouraged African-American housewives to patronize black-owned businesses and promoted an agenda of self-reliance and economic growth. Comprised of local groups, like this one at Chapel Hill, the organization grew in membership to more than 10,000, with headquarters in Detroit. A scarce surviving copy of the Charter for the local chapter based in Chapel Hill.
