Art reference book with three quarter green leather binding, linen covers, and marbled endpapers. Very small and rare printing of only 20 books, printed on Luxury Imperial Japan paper, this being number 7. Of books 1-20: contenant une double suite des planches, sur papier imperial du japon et sur papier de chine. This book being numbered 7. An additional 500 were printed in Hollande paper after this edition. Excellent steel plate engravings largely composing of portraiture but also many beautiful artworks from this exposition. A stunning work in very good + condition with some light foxing present, scuffs to linen cloths, slight wear to hinges and corners and slight rippling of pages. First separate edition, first printing of the first publication on the discovery of argon, which led to Nobel Prizes for its co-discoverers. "Few discoveries have been as dramatic as the discovery of argon in the atmosphere by Lord Rayleigh and William Ramsay, professor of chemistry at University College, London. Long note in small hand to first blank detailing the purchase of the volume in 1840 and some notes on the poet : trimmed at the head of the leaves : corners slightly rounded and gilt worn in patches but mostly bright.
