This is the last Library Edition of Croaker's Boswell. Spines evenly attractively sunned. A Very Fine, pristine set in a stupendous binding.

Cantabrigiae [Cambridge] : John White, 1622 A fair to good copy of the scarce 1st edition with map, in contemporary full leather binding. The binding has wear to spine joints, the top and bottom of the spine and edges, but is of good quality leather and would repair well. Page edges red. Internally there is an armorial bookplate of the Kinnaird family to the front pastedown and a signature of James West, clearly an early owner, on the fep.James has made some notes about the elections to Parliament for the County of Leicester in 1775. The fep has a tear at the top. With decorative title page (small repair to side margin); dedication 2pp; To the Reader 6pp; double page map; text pp 1-332; Catalogue 6pp; finis; table added in ms 3pp. The shields have been carefully coloured in (including one on the title page)- possibly by or for an early owner as there has been occasional offsetting from the colouring over time. Printer's mark of flying horse over cornucopia & hand from cloud holding caduceus to titlepage + 2 full-page portaits of six + seven kings at page 38 & 410 + head- & tail-pieces & figural or foliated initials.. Folio handsome gilt 18th century gilt sprinkled calf with red spine label and 6 raised bands, gilt spine compartments, raised bands, dentelles & reverses (minor splitting to head and foot of one board but covers well attached, tips bumped). All Edges Marbled to match endpapers, sstamp on flyleaf "bound by J. Clarke". James Howell, (c1594-1666) navigated his way with some difficulty through the changing allegiances of the English Civil War, Commonwealth and Restoration, spending 8 years in prison between 1643 and 1650. He attempted various court positions, becoming Royal Historiographer to Charles II in 1660, but made most of his living from writing. Londinopolis describes the main landmarks and areas of London with outlines of their history. Lowell is frank that he has 'fetched' most of his materials from others and it is considered that much of the content comes from Stow. This copy of Londinopolis is in a later 1800's full leather binding by H Woodburn.This has a delicate blind tooled border of leaves to the boards; raised bands, blind tooled designs and title label to spine.
