The author traces the history of Chinese Blue and White up to the present day, and pays attention to the impact that the export trade had in Europe, North America and Southeast Asia. The twists and turns in the development of Blue and White are described against the backcloth of events in China and elsewhere, and the personalities of the various Emperors who commanded the production of new Blue and White wares. He covers very fully the problems that students new to the field may experience, and in special appendices describes the actual manufacture of Blue and White and the significance and symbolic meaning of many of the designs with which it has been decorated.
