A railroad expedition guide for the rising middle class of vacationers from 1874 when steamboats and railroads were making vacation and travel an option. -------------- The frontispiece is a folding panorama by Alfred E. Waud. It is a full 11.5 feet long with 40 engraved panels displaying both sides of the river from Quebec to Cape Vincent, there is an additional section showing the Niagara River and Falls. -------------- Bindings are tight and square. Text clean, light even toning. Moderate shelf handling wear. The cloth has sun-faded on the spine and front. Three-inch break in cloth at the top front joint, from the fold-out map; no loss to strength or structure. 8vo; 7.75 inches tall; 176, [66 ads] 6 folding maps. ----------- The 1874 edition is bound in decorative cloth with gold embossing and includes 6-fold-out maps, illustrations, and many period hotel and amusement advertisements. Though not the First Edition, the most desirable due to the maps.
