Based on the 1975 stage production of the same name, a Broadway play is being put on by Zach (Douglas) and he is holding auditions. His former love interest also shows up to audition and she is desperate to work any role, even to be in the chorus line. Throughout the film, the stories of the dancers are revealed, all varied, but all focused on a love of dance. According to director Attenborough, Madonna auditioned for the production as a dancer under her birth name Ciccone and was turned away. Nominated for three Academy Awards.
