Macdonald, London 1951-1969. A first edition (first printing) set of Williamson's celebrated semi-autobiographical sequence of fifteen novels which explore the fortunes of one family during the first half of the twentieth century. 8vo. Several top edges lightly dust marked, with just a hint of light partial browning to two or three free endpapers. Former owner name and date neatly inked to the front free endpaper of all but one volume, in each instance accompanied by a small area of surface abrasion (possibly a result of somebody trying to obscure this signature), but the impact is extremely minor. One volume ('The Gale of the World') also contains a tiny dealer plate to the front pastedown, and another volume ('The Golden Virgin') exhibits some top- and fore edge spotting, and the binding is a little cocked. An extremely crisp set in the original James Broom-Lynne-designed pictorial dust wrappers, none of which have been price-clipped. A number exhibit a little minor rubbing and chafing to the spine ends, and some occasional minor dust soiling to the predominantly white rear panels. The publisher s red spine panel colouring to 'Love and the Loveless' is faded as is so often the case although this example much less so that is customary. The only dust wrapper that is graded below very good is Donkey Boy which exhibits some taped reinforcement and restoration. A very nice example of an increasingly scarce set - a Burgess Ninety-Nine.. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good.

Eyre & Spottiswoode, London, 1951. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. The first UK edition (first printing) of the author's first book. 8vo. 499pp. Beige cloth lettered in red at the spine. Backstrip and upper edges of the boards lightly spotted. Endpapers partially browned and with some additional light spotting which also impacts several preliminary and (blank) concluding leaves. A very good copy in very good non-price-clipped pictorial dust wrapper designed by Stein, with just a touch of spotting and tanning, several tiny closed tears and several slivers of loss from the spine panel ends. First published by Harcourt Brace in the US in March 1950, this distinctly more uncommon UK edition followed a year later. The novel was not a success: it was trashed by a number of reviewers, Kerouac's royalties did not exceed his advance of $1,000 and it was six years before the publication of his next novel, 'On the Road'..

Description:
Panther, London 1962-1969. Book. Poor. Soft cover. 2nd Edition. The second edition (and first paperback issue) of Williamson's celebrated sequence of novels, with a slightly revised text. 8vo. Readership creases to the spines. Some wear, creasing and marking to the wrappers. Edges spotted, some spine ends a little chipped. Some toning to the paperstock. The wrappers of five volumes have been covered in decorated paper by a former owner, this has been subsequently removed but traces remain, especially to two volumes ('The Golden Virgin' and 'A Test to Destruction'). An about acceptable reading set. Due to poor sales, Panther declined to publish the final two volumes ('Lucifer Before Sunrise' and 'The Gale of the World') so this is the complete set, if limited to thirteen rather than the intended fifteen volumes..
