London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme And Brown; and J. White And Co., 1810. Leather Bound. Good +/Very Good. 8vo. Vols I, II: lxiii; pp. 420; ix, pp. 352. Vol III, IV: ix, 352; xviii, pp. 420, Notes and Emendations 399-420. Vols V, VI: xix, pp. 395; xix, pp. 408, Notes and Emendations, 401-408. Vols VII, VIII; xx, pp. 418; (vi), (xvii) only, thus missing vii-xvi of the table of contents. A binder's error as no evidence at all of the pages having been removed; pp 462, with Notes and Emendations 445 - 462, inc. a scheme of a family tree. Vols IX, X; xxiii, pp. 473; xx, pp. 472. Vol XI, xxiii, pp. 455; xi, pp. 215, index, pp. 218-373. A few noble family trees scattered throughout the set. The set in 13 separate volumes was first published in 1809 with the last volume a set of plates. This set has the text of the first 12 volumes complete in six but no volume of plates. There is no mention of a volume of plates, suggesting this set was likely printed without them. Bound in an attractive, contemporary plain full polished tan calf with four bands to spines; each band with gilt lines; red leather labels with gilt titles; edges sprinkled red. Plain endpapers, with the armorial bookplate of 'Heytesbury House' to front pastedown of each vol, family seat of the Barontecy of Heytesbury and thus the original copy either of first baronet, Sir William à Court (d. 1817), or his heir, William, later Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. On an aside, Heytesbury was home to Siegfried Sassoon from 1933. Translated by the remarkable Thomas Johnes, who first published the work at his private Hafod Press in Cardiganshire, Wales in 1809, it remained the standard translation throughout the C19th. Some scuffs to individual volumes, wear mainly to spine ends, occasional minor chipping to a few of the spines, hinge split to base of vol III/IV; gutter to rear of vol V/VI is exposed, binding seems perfectly firm; VII/VIII lacks title labels; chipped to hd of spine with a small scorch mark and smaller one to base of spine; vol IX/X has had some water damage to the spine which lacks lustre but there is no damage to the binding or text; minor worming at margins of prelims in Vol XI - no loss of text and it has disappeared by pp. 37. Occasional scattered spotting to pages, more so to prelims, but not severe. Overall a decent, sound and attractive set in a less common format. Pease enquire about overseas posting charges.
