New York: MacMillan Publishing Co. 1977. (4to) 192pp. Very good, no dust jacket. Black and white and color photographs and illustrations, appendices, bibliography, index. The spine and covers are faded and the endpapers are lightly dampstained at the bottom edge. "The circus as we know it today owes its origins to Philip Astley, a one-time Sergeant-Major in the 15th Light Dragoons, who gave his exhibitions of equestrian expertise, and later of performing animals, in London in the 1770s" - from the first chapter. Also writes as Leo Bruce. (Theater, Circus, Clowns, Entertainers, Theater).
