In this work the author proposes to "clarify the Hindus' understanding of Law before they encountered western notions on that subject. I [the author] am concerned essentially with aspects of private law, in other words those that obtain between individuals." (Taken from the author's Preface). Part one of the book looks at Dharma, which can be translated as "duty" and expresses the notion of the natural order of things, while part two examines the transition from Dharma to Law. .
