About This Item

Mobile: La Clede Hotel. Very Good. 1940. Brochure. Mobile: Very Good. 1940s. A single sheet folded twice to form an advertising brochure for the La Clede Hotel in Mobile, Alabama. There is a photograph of theexterior of the hotel on the first panel and an array of six interior photographs across the three panels when opened fully. There is also a map showing the hotel's location with respect to various travel routes. The brochure proudly displays the AAA symbol indicating the Hotel is an approved member of the American Automobile Association - THE stamp of approval in the mid 20th century for travelers. The brochure highlights its Air Conditioned Mayfair Restaurant and Coffee Shop. The venerable LaClede Hotel building in historic downtown Mobile began life in 1855 as two separate federal-style buildings, with a fruit market and other stores on the ground floor, and living quarters above. In 1871, a third building was added and the three structures were wrapped with a cast iron gallery and covered balcony, unifying them to become the LaClede Hotel. The LaClede was among Mobile's most prestigious hotels until well into the twentieth century and hosted many of the city's important social events. By mid-century, however, its fortunes had turned, and the august institution closed its doors in 1963. . 1940s; Americana and American History, Advertising, Most Recent Listing .
