About This Item

London: Horace Cox. Good+ with no dust jacket. 1895. First Edition. Hardcover. In the original publisher's dark green cloth with gilt titling to the spine, and gilt titling and a gilt coastal illustration to the front board. Covers are clean but with some rubbing/'turning'/closed nicks to the head/tail of the spine and tips of the corners. Page fore-edges are lightly 'toned' due to ingrained dust over time as usual with a book of this age. FIRST Edition 1895. Internally the inner hinges have been re-glued at some point in the past. Some pale foxing spots/patches to the endpapers, prelims, Title and first few pages, but, although there is the odd spot here and there in the text, most of the book is spot free and very clean, but some of the gathers are uneven. Probably due to the page block being pretty 'heavy'. A page very near the end has some clear archive tape repairs to the blank margin/outer edges, o/w NO Inscriptions or other major marks that I can see. (xix) + (1) + 444 pp Plus 21 Full page b/w plates including the Frontispiece. Many of these illustrations done from sketches by the Author. A very large fold-out Map of 'The Coasts of Devon' is at the end of the book. The author has written a number of books on the area, eg: his 'Explorations of Dartmoor and its Antiquities' (1889) , 'An Exploration of Exmoor' (1890) , & 'The Rivers of Devon: From Source to Sea' (1893). They are generally regarded as 'Bibles' by students of Devon's history. First Editions are relatively scarce. See Images ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .
