Octavo, printed on Archive Long Life Text paper, bound in full vellum, all edges gilt, with 24-carat gold lettering, in bumped publisher's slipcase with gilt-stamped heraldic crest. This volume contains Baroness Clementine Spencer-Churchill's "Preface to The Collected Works". Promoted as an edition limited to 3000 sets for the world, in fact only 1700 were sold. This volume is a "Subscriber's Proof Copy": it was sent to R. Hunt as a sample volume, and it may lack some textual corrections, and may have redrawn maps. It was directed to be returned to the publisher after examination. Its binding matches the published volumes. Only complete sets of 34 + 4 volumes were to be sold by the publisher. The General Editor for this set was Frederick Woods, the bibliographer of Churchill [ See the Woods bibliography p. 391].

Full white vellum, gilt framed and with Churchill's coat-of-arms stamped in gilt, gilt spine lettering, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers, ribbon bookmark. Richly illustrated with photo reproductions, maps (some folding), charts, facsimiles, etc. A slight, natural variance in the tone of the vellum, lacking the slip-cases, else a near fine, clean, tight set. Handsome on the shelf.

The bindings elaborately produced in full white vellum (natural variation in the vellum color), covers decorated in 22 ct. gold with Churchill's armorial device, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers, silk place markers. All original leatherette slipcases present, some with cosmetic defects (nothing structural) from having been squeezed together on the same shelves UNTOUCHED for almost fifty years, the result being small portions of adjacent slipcase covers peeled away. Some volumes (e.g. Vol. 1) are very tight in their slipcases on account of the natural vellum bindings swelling. NONE of the slipcases are bumped or split, and the bindings and the contents of every volume are in IMMACULATE CONDITION, without blemishes (of any kind), bookplates, inscriptions, or ownership stamps. A deluxe limited edition reprinting every book-length title, together with four volumes that constituted the complete essays, collected for the first time, this set was issued, slipcased, in full white vellum bindings. The upper covers are gilt stamped with Churchill's coat of arms, the spines are lettered in gilt and all fore-edges are gilt, with marbled endpapers and silk ribbon markers.
