Artists and Art critics along the Seine in Paris. Beautiful original watercolour in a cubistic style by Walt Louderback (1887-1941), ca. 1928-1930, ca. 53 x 36.5 cm.

Walt Louderback (1887-1941), painter and illustrator, studied at the Art Institute of Chicago. He illustrated stories for Cosmopolitan, Good Housekeeping, Hearst's International, and other popular magazines. Many of those stories were also printed in hardbound editions with Louderback's illustrations. Readers of the 1910s and '20s would have been well acquainted with the art of Walt Louderback, as he illustrated books by one of the most popular authors of the day, James Oliver Curwood (1878-1927). In addition to being an artist, Louderback also taught at the Art Institute. During the 1920s, Louderback lived in Europe, he was married to his 2nd wife in Paris, and delivered his assignments to New York by surface vessel. He also experimented with modernist and Cubist painting. As war loomed, Louderback left Europe with his family in May 1939. He died at a sanitarium in Socorro, New Mexico, on October 15, 1941.

According to his orbituary of 1941: "(-) he attended Michigan University for two years after which he entered the Chicago Art School and made painting and illustrating his life work. For a number of years he was illustrator for James Oliver Curwood, writer of Alaskan and Canadian tales. Later, he illustrated for Vincente Blanco Ibanez of Spain, author of "The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse."

Mr. Louderback exhibited his paintings in many countries including the principal academies of Europe. For a number of years he lived in Monte Carlo, Monaco and on the island of Baleares off the coast of Spain, also in France and Switzerland. Many of his paintings won first prizes in leading exhibits all over the world.".

In 1936 the University of Michigan could choose as a gift from Louderback, one watercolour from a group of 25 which were previously exhibited at the Chicago International Water Color Exhibition. They choose the also French themed: "The Unemployed' - France".

Our work is a beautiful watercolour, a fine example of his rare to find personal artwork. At the moment, quality framed. - In very good condition.

Executed in charcoal and ink on paper- Charles Livingston Bull's preferred medium-an elegant composition of a Blue-winged Teal in flight leading a V formation ofr ducks at dusk. As in his drawing of the Solitary Teal, (6671) here the influence of Japanese design is unmistakable. As a collector of Japanese wood block prints- Bull studied and here utilized the finely- tuned conventions of image building commonly found in the Japanese prints of the late nineteenth century. Executed in charcoal and ink on paper- Charles Livingston Bull's preferred medium- On a rocky outcropping set above sinuous trees, a crouching Fox spies on two unsuspecting Hare below. It is evident in this charged scene of the intended hunt set in a sinuously treed landscape Bull owes a debt to the ephemerally fluid nature of the English Art Nouveau, and reflective of the work of Aubrey Beardsley (1872 - 1898)- a clear inspiration to Bull. Nonetheless- this drawing could quite possibly have been a composition intended for Andrews Wilkinson's Plantation Stories of Old Louisiana. It was not unusual for Bull to create far more compositions than were used for hundreds of stories he illustrated. Yet as was Bull's… Read More
