Vondel, Joost van den (17 November 1587 – 5 February 1679) Dutch playwright, poet translator. A collection of almost all the plays, over half in first editions; also the major poetry and translations. 48 separate works bound in 12 vols, quarto. 11 in uniform contemporary vellum, 1 in modern gray wrappers. Mostly published by Abraham De Wees (1639- 1696).

All the important the plays are collected here including Lucifer (1654)* (said to have influenced John Milton), Jeptha (1659)** (his "theatrical compass"), Adam in Ballingschap (1654), Leewendalers (a glorification of the Peace of Münster, called the most perfect drama our poet has left us.) Included are Vondel's translations of Euripides' Feniciaensche van Thebes [Phoenician Women] (1668) and Sophocles' Herkules in Trachin (The Trachiniae) (1668). Vondel's translations of the works of Ovide are collected (1671), as are his translations of Virgil in two editions (in prose, De Wees, 1646 and in verse, Visser, de Coup, et. al. after De Wees plates, 1696). Finally, there are two volumes of his collected poetry (Leonard Strik, 1683) and a number of his beautiful religious poems, including the alte Geheimenissen [Mysteries of the Altar] and Brieven der Helige Maeghden (1687).

All the works are published in quarto, most by Abraham de Wees, or, after he died, his wife Joannes de Wees with the distinctive title page engraving of bucket hanging above a well. Several of the works are illustrated with etchings by important Dutch painters and engravers: Cornelius Galle, Jan van Luykens, Abraham Bloteling (Blooteling), and others.

London: Ernest Benn, Limited, 1929. FIRST UK EDITION. 8vo, pp. xxi, [iii], 203, [1]. Original brown cloth, orange lettering to spine. Chip and wear to head of spine, bruising and wear to bottom extremities, blotching to lower board. Top edge dusty, fore-edge a little spotted. Feps lightly toned, pushing to bottom corner of a couple of early signatures, short closed tears to top edges of pp. 89-104, reaching 2cm at pp. 103-4, text unaffected. Else, pleasingly clean and tidy. Very good. Unusual in the trade, though fairly well represented in British and Irish research libraries. 'With an Introduction on the American Negro in Art' by Du Bose Heyward. Publication of the British edition of the Heywards' play (plus other international editions) coincided with an eleven-week European tour of Porgy in spring 1929. It opened without previews on 10 April at His Majesty's Theatre, London and closed on 1 June 1929. While British theatre-goers welcomed the Porgy cast, with the opening night apparently receiving 12… Read More

Bookseller's ticket to front pastedown, review clipping laid in. Else, clean and tight. In the original muted brown paper dust jacket: price-clipped, spine gently sunned and creased, head of spine frayed, wear to extremities. Still, a pleasing copy. Very good/ very good. Unusual in the trade. Originally published in 1916 by John Lane in New York and London, Constable's new edition featured an additional four plays, 'Phantasmagoria,' 'The Court of Progress,' 'The Dream' and 'The Hand of the Potter'. The laid in review draws attention to the cinematic facets of the playwright's work: "Mr. Theodore Dreiser's collection of plays is a reminder of the films' continuous and increasing influence upon the theatre. Chicago: Dixie-Vortex Company. Very Good. 1937. First Edition. Hardcover. These DIXIE CUP PREMIUMS were given to a patron when they had 12 collectible ice cream lids with miniature photos of stars. After collecting the 12 needed lids required to trade for one photo, most children decided it was better to keep all 12 lids rather than trade them for one photo therefore increasing the high collectibility and scarceness of the premiums. A series of 24 different stars were published for each year along with a special cover. I These full-color large-format premiums feature beautiful artwork and rich color printed on heavy card stock paper. Each premium was designed with a color stripe & two holes along the left edge for easy binding in a scrapbook. Each year the color of the stripe & the lettering changed; thus, although undated, each year's issue is distinctive. The reverse of each 8 x 10-inch premium features 1-black-and-white stills from the star's recent films along with a… Read More
