1993. Collection of a group 14 items of miscellaneous, ephemera, letters and photographs of Navy ships relating to Canada including HMCS Provider, HMS Ariadne, other Ships and Bou-Mahni Mines Algiers materials. Dates on photos are period dates not we believe when the prints were made.

HMCS Provider (2 items):

• Typed Letter Signed from R.H. Kirby, CO, dated 3 April 1979

• B&W photograph of the Ship's Company, September 1878

HMCS Provider was a replenishment oiler and sole ship of her class of first the Royal Canadian Navy and later the Canadian Forces. She was the first Operational Support ship in the RCN and was designed with the capacity for the stowage of fuel, ammunition, supplies, provisions (dry and refrigerated) and replacement helicopters. She was commissioned for the Royal Canadian Navy in 1963, and the largest ship built in Canada to that date. She was built by Davie Shipbuilding and Repairing Company Limited of Lauzon, Quebec. The ship was paid off in 1998, sold for scrap and broken up in Turkey in 2003.

HMS Ariadne:

• Typed Letter Unsigned from Ronald G Capern, Commander, RCN, retired, dated 24 November 1992

• Photocopy letter from Joy Fehr, Royal Military CollePge Club Office dated 24 February 1993

• B&W 8 x 10 inch photo HMS Ariadne Coronation Day Notman Studio (Halifax) 9998

HMS Ariadne was a Diadem-class protected cruiser of the Royal Navy, which was launched in 1898, In March 1913, she was converted to a stokers' training ship and in 1917 was converted to a minelayer and assigned to the Nore Command. Leaving Portsmouth in early July, she arrived at the station headquarters at Halifax and formally succeed HMS Crescent as flagship to the station on 15 July. In August-September 1902 she visited St Johns, Newfoundland, Quebec City and Charlottetown. She was torpedoed and sunk off Beachy Head by the German submarine UC-65 (Otto Steinbrinck) on 26 July 1917.

• B&W 8 x 9 inch photo (BOU MANHI?) map.
