Carmel, CA, 1920. An uncommon collection of 21 original photographs by Slevin (each 5 x 7") - 18 are indicated by a stamp "Photo by L. S. Slevin Carmel, Cal" on verso, in the plate, or blindstamp below the image. There are an additional 3 photographs of the same era and quality but no photographer indicated. 14 of the photographs show various buildings and old adobes in Carmel and Monterey and 7 photographs show Montery's iconic Cypress trees in coastal settings. Pencil notations on the verso of most of the buildings indicating location & names, including the Underwood apartments on downtown Alvarado Street, dated '90; Colton Hall; Forest Theater in Carmel; Abrego Adobe; De Soto Adobe; Old Blockhouse forts; Gen. Halleck & Sherman House noting the cannon; House of Four Winds; Larkin House; Alvarado Adobe; Basque House (most likely Alvarado Adobe); Hotel Del Monte's Roman Plunge and more. Lightly faded over time; near fine. Louis S. Slevin (1878 - 1945) arrived in Carmel in 1903 and built a store on Ocean Avenue, becoming the first postmaster and express agent. He photographed buildings, houses, street scenes, businesses, cultural arts and nature all around Monterey County from Big Sur to Salinas. While the Monterey Peninsula has long been a mecca for photographers around the world, Slevin was the first to shoot a full range of black & white images of early days around the Monterey Peninsula.

Description:
Against a stark horizon in a harsh climate, settlers in Nebraska everywhere erected monuments to their optimism. The buildings pictured in Dreams in Dry Places are not just famous landmarks like the State Capitol but also humble farmhouses, barns, grain elevators, courthouses, banks, churches, stores, and theaters. They represent every kind of architecture to be found in Nebraska--folk, high-style, commercial, residential, pioneer, and modern; the unexpected and the familiar, the poetic and the prosaic, good and bad. Caught by Roger Bruhn's camera, these structures always suggest the spiritual resources of their builders and inhabitants, who struggled for a livelihood on the Great Plains.Dreams in Dry Places has an architecture of its own, beginning and ending with images of the natural landscape and in between revealing unexpected continuities among disparate structures and settings, juxtapositions of forms, and the vanities and vagaries of architectural style. Exterior and interior shots are…
