About This Item

Boston: T. R. Marvin, 1846. Fifth edition, revised and enlarged, pp. 40, self-wrappers; corners of upper wrapper chipped, text clean and sound, contemporary owner's signature on upper wrapper, very good or better. Rev. Tracy was perhaps a true believer in the colonialization of Africa. "[He] did not view Liberia as a mere convenient place for an inconvenient population. Besides sincere anti-slavery views, he saw African colonization as a way of Christian mission. He also had an important influence in the founding of the college at Liberia and bringing it into successful operation." He writes here mostly about the necessity of Christian conversion and the effect of piracy on the continent. The colonialization movement at large, by the time this pamphlet was published, was considered a failure and was supported mostly by people whose primary concern was the removal of former slaves from America. Afro-Americana 10375 for the first edition of the previous year.
