First edition. 4to: 110,[2, Index]pp, with the half-title and 27 hand-colored plates (watermarked 'J Whatman Turkey Mill 1823'), "elegantly colored, typical of the high degree of finish usually found in Rudolph Ackermann's work" (Archer); a general plan, uncolored, with overlay in sepia, and woodcut diagrams in the text. Modern chocolate calf, sides framed in single gilt fillet and leaf roll in blind, spine in six compartments divided by French fillets with central gilt flower ornaments, green morocco lettering piece gilt, end papers renewed. An exceptional copy, finely rebound to period style, text and plates clean, fresh and unmarked. Abbey Life 46. Ray, England, 43. Cleveland Collections 868. Archer 248.2. Prideaux, p. 181. First Edition of this important and charming work on garden design, a "necessary companion volume to the author's Rural Residences and of greater rarity" (Abbey), discussing "specific techniques for achieving [the] integration of architecture and landscape. . . . According to Papworth, the architect must possess artistic as well as technical abilities." He must have "qualifications both of the painter and sculptor; and the power of combining the theories of art with scientific excellence.'" (Archer). This "well printed [book] with pleasing little plates and readable text" (Prideaux) originated as a series of 34 articles, each consisting of a single plate and accompanying description, appearing in Ackermann's Repository between 1819 and 1821. Papworth chose 28 of these fine aquatints (including ones of an aviary, dairy, ice house, laundry, poultry house, Venetian tent, bath and apiary) to be included here and added revised and expanded descriptions with "an important new introductory essay" (Archer). Chatwin Books, 2021. First Edition. Trade Paperback. New. New! 'I know from my own experience that an evening spent tending my garden, after another incomprehensible day, brings a strength and calmness that no other activity can match. Is it the qualities associated with gardening, such as nurturing and the hard work of hands and heart, that are deficient in our culture? Much good writing has been done about the garden as a special place.' Madeleine Wilde's woodland garden on the south slope of Seattle's Queen Anne Hill was more than a "special place." It was her Sanctuary, her prism through which she explored the world and accomplished "much good writing." For two decades, starting in the early 1990s, Madeleine's "Notes from the Garden" delighted readers of the Queen Anne & Magnolia News in Seattle. Here, in luminous prose, is the best of her work from those years, ranging from hands-on advice for gardeners and would-be gardeners to poetically charged, often wry, insights into life in the tradition…
